The beautiful Achilles Scar

Sports Apps: Recovering from Major Injuries

Sports and fitness apps are all the rage! Ever since Nike Fit came on the market, we have analyzed and tried out different devices and Apps. However, our athletic career came to a standstill when we almost severed our Achilles. Thank goodness our friends, family and physical therapist (pt) introduced us to some helpful Sports Apps that can spur recovery from major athletic injuries.

Recovering from Achilles surgery or any type of foot, leg or knee surgery requires patience and self-discipline. Of course, these injuries frequently occur during the life stage when we are parents and have super busy lives juggling career and family. We were just too busy to take care of ourselves. If we had only gone to the doctor when we first felt the pop a few years ago playing tennis with friends or when we were chasing our daughter down the alpine race course last spring. We don’t have time to rest and recover but major injuries change life as we know it. However, the risk of not being able to walk or run again scared our pants off so we even asked for an extra two weeks in a hard cast for good measure. By the way, hard casts now come in such fun fashionable colors but we digress….

THE FAMOUS KNEE SCOOTER PERFECT FOR ACHILLES INJURIES

So after three months of tooling around by knee scooter and then walking very slowly, we have switched getting into shape in high gear. However, with this type of injury, patience is a virtue or so says our orthopedist and pt. Can’t believe it takes over a year for recovery! The good news is that we discovered some great Sports Apps along the way. Of course, you must be sure to listen to your physician or pt before you try anything. All Apps are free and for both iOS and Android:

RunKeeper: turns your phone into a personal trainer. This voice directed App tracks your walking and as your healing progresses–your running. Our PT Jason at West Woodlands Physical Therapy prescribed that we alternate walking for one minute and running for two minutes for a total of six minutes. As your strength comes back, you can even track bike rides, hikes, and more using the GPS in your iPhone.

My Fitness pal: offers the largest food database of any calorie-counting Fitness App. The Tracker measures your daily calorie intake and exercise routine to make sure you manage your goals. This App is perfect with the transition from bed rest to everyday activity since it can optimize calorie and activity balance

Fitocracy uses game-like stats to create friendly competition and seed your dedication to working out. Since you get points for different activities, social interaction is key. The App also features resources for all kinds of fitness enthusiasts, from swimmers to weightlifters

Gym Pact: helps you by tracking your gym visits against your weekly goal. You actually get paid for gym visits but you have to honor your pact or you get charged! The payment option can be a bit controversial so make sure you are ready. Also synchs with RunKeeper and gets good reviews from physicians.

JawboneUP: is a device vs just an App. Our medical team recommended the wristband for our next step up in the fitness routine. The band tracks mood, fitness, and rest, all while synching with your smart phone. Have you tried it? Could it be a good Father’s Day gift and we share with the hubbies? We will keep you posted on our experience, but so far friends give it rave reviews.

Flying Delta, Southwest, US Air, & United with a disability

Navigating Achilles surgery on our right ankle last August was a very tough experience because the rehabilitation moved very slowly. But the experience of being disabled opened our eyes to the very serious lessons of what it would be like to not be able to walk and have to be so reliant on other people. It was very interesting to see how one is treated with a disability during everyday activities and especially during travel. Since we love to write about travel, we thought it would be helpful to share our experiences with different airlines.

Like the story of Achilles in Greek mythology, an injury to that tendon can render you helpless. Not being able to walk for three months was quite stressful especially with three children, work and a cross-country move to a new town. Luckily friends from across the country sent meals and neighbors helped us drive the children to activities. Friends even found a college student who could handle the morning routine and drive our children to and from school. After a month on bed rest with the right leg propped up, we decided to venture out in the world using a knee scooter.

THE FAMOUS KNEE SCOOTER PERFECT FOR ACHILLES INJURIES

The scooter ended up being a lifesaver. Not only did it give a good work out, but also it became constant entertainment for family and friends. It could gain speed very quickly so the brakes had plenty of use. We began to feel confident enough around town that we decided to begin traveling again. The best part of traveling became packing more shoes than usual because we only needed one!!! Unfortunately, we did have a bit of an issue with a formal party when we accidentally packed only the right one. Black loafers with a cocktail dress attracted a few looks at the business school reunion.

Even though all airlines or airports may not accept it in advance, try calling a week before your flights to arrange help. Often the airlines will give you seats close to the front of the plane. If you are extra nice, sometimes they will book you in the comfort seats that have more room. Some airlines even have a special chair that takes you to the bathroom. In addition, the pre-arrangement of a wheel chair or golf cart within the terminal makes traveling with the family less stressful. The transport team will even help you through security, which can be very tricky handling a suitcase and a laptop when you can’t stand.

Overall, we had positive experiences with how most airlines handle disabilities. Listed below is our review of the airlines we flew this past year based upon our observations and analysis:

Southwest: leads the pack with the handling of customers with disabilities due to courteousness of the staff. The attendants made the boarding and the flight very easy and comfortable. Since it was our first time on Southwest, we closely watched the way customers line up by numbers in key groupings before boarding the plane. Since we were traveling with a disability via wheelchair, we boarded first and avoided the cattle call. Southwest also gets big points for WIFI on all their flights.

Delta: scored a close second. The only airline that took down our disability concerns in advance, the Delta team cracked jokes and went above and beyond to meet our needs such as storing our luggage and helping us to the powder room.

US Air: required us to request assistance when we arrived the airport which took time. The staff was polite but a bit rushed.

United: ranked just okay. We rated the Denver crew higher than the teams on our flights to Buffalo and Los Angeles. The differences in attendant’s moods might have been dictated by the size of our plane (bigger plane=nicer staff) and the delay issues with the 787 dreamliner.

Southwest airlines (Photo credit: Photographer Clayton)

We also must point out that New York City and Westchester County, NY make traveling with a disability very pleasant. We braved the New York City sidewalks (very accessible ramps and crossing signals), Metro North, the Subway and the Waldorf Astoria on our knee scooter. Public servants, staff at the Waldorf and everyday citizens could not have been nicer! One very attractive city cop even helped us hop up a subway stairwell. We don’t know why the big Apple gets a bad rap!

Park Avenue (west) elevation of the Waldorf=Astoria Hotel, New York City. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

We are very thankful that our disability was only short-lived and our prayers are with those who navigate issues on a daily basis. If we can ever do anything to support you, please let us know. Also, we would love to learn about your travel experiences. Please leave your comments below.

A copy of Kees Van Dongren’s The Corn Poppy by my Mom

The Perfect Outing:

This year we have the perfect Mother’s Day outing planned. Our mom is taking us to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston (MFAH) to see the Picasso exhibit followed by an early dinner. A day exploring an art museum is a childhood tradition that we still treasure. When growing up in Tennessee, our mom would create a fun family night by making us pretend we were visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) in New York City. She would share slides from her days at Moore College of Art. To keep us entertained, she would explain the inspirations and techniques of the artists in exquisite detail allowing the vivid colors to jump off the screen.

Mom’s gift of bestowing a love of art and creativity has turned into lifelong passion. We fill our lives with a steady diet of art museums and galleries several times a month. When our children grumble about going to an art museum “yet again”, we tell them that art is ”food for the soul”. Hopefully, someday they will grow to love art as much as we do. Recently, we discovered that the strategy works because the children enjoy sketching with their Grandfather who is studying to be an artist.

The Roof of the MET

True to our childhood dream, our favorite activity for Mother’s Day when we lived near New York City was to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We would drag the three children to see the impressionist paintings. They could only take an hour lap around the exhibit before kiddie culture overload. Then, we would head up to the Roof Garden Cafe for a simple but delicious lunch paired the extraordinary views of New York. Afterwards, we would push our luck with a studying a few more impressionist paintings followed by a trek to the arms and armor exhibit strolling through the enthralling sculpture gardens along the way. Sometimes, the children would even let us glimpse Louis Comfort Tiffany’s intricate stained glass masterpiece Magnolia and Irises, ca. 1908.

Given our family background and traditions, you can imagine how excited we are to see the Picasso exhibit at Museum of Fine Arts Houston(MFAH). Over an early dinner, we will be sure to discuss Picasso’s Black and White period and the evolution of his work. This outing will create the perfect day for all our family. We are so happy to spend special time with our Mom. As we experience the different life stages of our three children, our respect continues to grow for Mom’s ability to manage four energetic children only a few years apart.

The Perfect Gift:

To compliment the perfect day, we must say we do love the perfect gift. Every year our hubbies ask us what we want and we agonize over quality gifts for a responsible price. Some of this year’s favorites are:

The Office Candy patent leather tote which works great for carrying the laptop, iPad, work or meeting files. Since it is not made of leather, it may not work for everyday commuting or life with three busy children, but it is the right accessory for special meetings. Also, the price is right at $85.

The Coach Legacy Perforated Swingpack is a wonderful purse for summer. We are thrilled that smaller purses are coming back into style given their light weight is better for the neck and back. The great thing about Coach purses is that if you take good care for them they can last forever. We can’t wait for our daughter to borrow our purse collection.

Another favorite for the mom thinking about going back to work (or even upcoming graduates) is the Job Agenda developed by our friend the amazing Sonal Rinello. Job Agenda retails for $24.99 so “get inspired and get hired”.

The Perfect Way to Celebrate Mother’s Day: Give back!

We are so thankful for our blessings as mothers. So it is always important to help those less fortunate. So this Mother’s Day, we are supporting three important causes that give back to mothers and women in need:

The United Nations Foundation’s One Shot At Life: link up and donate with 20 courageous bloggers who are making sure that all children have access to vaccines

The Verizon Hopeline: send Mom a virtual flower at verizonperfectday.com. Every flower sent equals a donation to domestic violence prevention

The Susan G. Komen and the WWE present the “Make Mom Proud” campaign to fight breast cancer: Race for the Cure, educate your family and friends to screen annually and donate to this worthwhile cause

We hope you have a wonderful Mother’s day or a fun time celebrating with your mother.

“All that I am or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother” – Abraham Lincoln

WWE GIves Back yet again!

Susan G. Komen and WWE wish you Happy Mother’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day this Sunday! To celebrate the gift of motherhood, WWEmoms are teaming up with the Susan G. Komen team for a twitter chat on Thursday from 7-8pm ET to discuss the Foundation’s “Make Mom Proud” awareness campaign in partnership with the WWE to support the fight against breast cancer. WWE urges fans to support moms by taking steps to educate themselves about breast cancer, participate in local Susan G. Komen Races in their communities, and donate to Komen, the world’s largest nonprofit funder of breast cancer research and community outreach programs.

Our boys are so excited that WWE is continuing to support Breast Cancer research. Our tween loved that John Cena served as spokesperson for the “Rise Above Cancer” campaign last October wearing co-branded, pink and black ring gear. He was equally impressed by how the campaign raised over $1mm for Susan G. Komen for the Cure during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Both of our sons have had close friends whose mothers recently recovered from breast cancer so this is a cause very near and dear to our hearts. Our family has been truly touched by yet another WWE program focused on helping families while teaching our children about the importance of helping others. We urge our children to make a difference every day so we love to promote brands that give back!

The “Make Mom Proud” TV and digital campaign calls on supporters to do something meaningful for their moms and the other important women in their lives. Throughout the month, WWE Superstar Triple H and Divas Alicia Fox and Layla will be featured in a series of public service announcements to generate awareness and encourage fans to get involved. Alicia Fox and Layla will also attend the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure and its surrounding events on Mother’s Day weekend in Washington, D.C., an area that has among the highest breast cancer mortality rates in the country.

Join host @WWEmoms, along with @JanetGoingCrazy, @SoberJulie, @RachelFerrucci, @MommyJenna, @LisaSamples, @wrestlingaddict and friends, at 7pm ET this Thursday, as we encourage WWE fans everywhere to get involved and support the fight against breast cancer!

Tech-Mommy: Health and Wellness Apps for Moms

With our crazy busy life styles, moms need to take time to make sure we keep ourselves healthy. Luckily, now there are a variety of health and wellness apps to help keep the doctor away. We can use these apps while waiting for school pickup or in the grocery line.

Most of us barely have time to take a shower so we definitely don’t have time to get sick. Plus, if we get sick, who is going to care for the children, the hubby and the aging parents when they get sick? We are truly the “sandwich generation” having our children later in life and caring for aging parents at the same time.

Moms need help staying healthy and happy so we can keep our families healthy and happy too. So here are our top 5 health and wellness apps:

“Love the life you live and live the life you love“-Rod Stewart

Rod Stewart: A classic come back

We chose Rod Stewart’s version of Van Morrison‘s “Have I told you lately that I love you” as our wedding song. Since we started listening to Rod Stewart as a tween, he remains a timeless classic to us. He has spent four decades being a rock star, three being a parent, and has a new album’s worth of rollicking stories to tell. Time is his first album of new material in almost 20 years and his hairstyle hasn’t changed one bit! Some of the highlights of the album are:

“She Makes me Happy” ranked as our favorite track with its upbeat and fun lyrics

“Beautiful Morning” and “the Finest woman” got us up dancing like the Rod songs of old such as “Young Turks”. “Young Turks” brings back cherished moments of our high school Civinettes Club leadership weekend where we used it for a skit

“It’s Over:” is a beautiful ballad that is sure to be a tear jerker over its divorce theme

“Time”: the namesake of the album fits the return of the super star

“Pure love”: features an incredible piano introduction with the promise of a sweet long distance love

“Live the Life” reminded us of the introduction of “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” which came out during junior high. We loved the inspiring message of the song to enjoy life because the years go by so fast

Loyal Rod Stewart fans will love this album since it reminds them of precious memories of growing up

Along with the release of Time, Stewart is set to embark on the European leg of his Live the Life tour on June 1st, while American dates with Steve Winwood will kick off October 17th.

“Can’t stop me now. The world is waiting. It is my turn to stand out in the crowd”

Give it a quick listen and let us know what you think: Time Album Preview. Then, you can download the album or your favorite songs from iTunes or Amazon.

When you think of Texas the first city that comes to mind is Dallas. The land of the cowboy can make a wonderful affordable family vacation. We love the Texan attitude of big and brave and strong. We have visited Dallas many times to see family and each time we find something new to explore.

Airfare, lodging and logistics:

Airlines: American has its hub in Dallas so check them first for good rates. Be sure to sign up for travel alerts on Travelocity or Kayak to find the best fares

Ground transportation: because everything is big and wide apart, we recommend renting a car and usually you can find a good deal with your airfare and lodging packages

The Gaylord Texan: luxury family accommodations where the staff wears cowboys shirts and the beautiful resort offers everything you could ever want. At the holiday times, the Gaylord presents beautiful decorations complete with a gigantic tree reaching its skylight ceiling. The hotel is quite close to the DFW Airport

The lobby of the Gaylord Texan

Great Wolf Lodge: amazing family fun with any type of water slide your children can imagine. They also feature a unique family scavenger hunt called Magiquest which keeps everyone occupied for hours. The resort is right next door to the Gaylord Texan

VBRO or Dwellable.com: are great options for rentals and B&Bs

No Fuss Family Friendly Restaurants:

Central Market Grocery: in Southlake has a great cafe with good food and healthy kids meals. You can sit outside right next to a fenced playground so the children can run. For a fun diversion, they also offer gourmet or kids cooking classes

Riverwalk Cantina: in the Gaylord Texan has yummy southwestern food with a family friendly atmosphere

Dickeys BBQ: a Dallas classic that features several days a week where kids eat free

Mooyah Hamburgers: great for gluten-free eaters, delicious fries and shakes. The restaurant features a giant wall where kids can color with dry erase markers. The best part: they have a bunch of cow jokes gracing the remaining establishment walls

Cowboys and Rangers and other fun stuff:

Rangers Ballpark in Arlington: another stop on our family tradition of hitting every baseball park in American together. (Promise to write a blog on this soon). We bought “All you can eat” seats which were a bargain for a large family but not the greatest food so be prepared.

Dallas Cowboys: going to a game with our favorite football team “growing up” is a must. Who didn’t love the Dallas Cowboys in the 70′s with Roger Staubach at quarterback? The stadium also hosted some of the playoff games for the NCAA Final Four

Perot Museum of Nature and Science: just opened and the building is “model” high-tech and environmentally friendly

The Dallas Museum of Art: an incredibly revolutionary museum because it provides free admission and quarterly programming for kids on the autism spectrum

The Dallas Arts District: the recently revamped area is perfect for an afternoon stroll and can be the right time to teach the “do not touch the art” lesson versus yelling in a quiet and prestigious museum like the Smithsonian (more on that one soon)

Klydewarrenpark: avoid kiddie culture overload by hitting the park just a few blocks from the Museum district. The spacious urban park offers games, books, putt-putt, table tennis, that you can check out for free. Another fun benefit of the park is the nearby food trucks of “up and coming” local chefs

Rodeo: You can’t miss the rodeo when in Texas. Check out the Fort Worth Stockyards and the Mesquite Rodeo. Would you believe they have mechanical bull riding for all ages? For the wee ones, it is a huggable velvet horse that only slightly shakes but provides memories of a lifetime.

Thanks to John & Anne Sullivan and their children for the family fun suggestions. You just gotta love Texas!

Worldwide Make-A-Wish Day on April 29th became a very special occasion in our house when the WWE highlighted the celebration with a special Monday Night Raw episode. John Cena granted the wishes of three little boys to become WWE Superstars for the night. Our boys sat on the end of their seats completely impressed by how happy a small wish can make a sick child.

World Wish Day celebrates the anniversary of the first wish granted. Since 1980, the Make-A-Wish Foundation has enriched the lives of children with life-threatening medical conditions through its wish-granting program. The Foundation’s mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities.

Would you believe that WWE Superstars grant over 120 wishes every year? John Cena even did the voice-over for the World Wish Day Campaign. Most important of all, the WWE’s social good work allows us to teach our children valuable life lessons about how important it is to help others. So let’s all get behind this wonderful cause by donating/volunteering.

Our daughter also received some fun news from WWE. She just loves former WWE Diva Kelly Kelly and voted for in the Kids Choice Awards last year as the favorite buttkicker. Unfortunately, Taylor Lautner won. But, on to the big news: this summer, WWE teams up with the E! network to present a new one hour reality show Total Divas.

WWE’s Bella Twins

The Show will feature an all access pass to the lives of WWE’s Leading Ladies such as the Bella Twins and Natalya. We will find out how tough they really are and how tough their job is.

What do you think of the new show idea? Our hope is that it has a message of empowerment for our girls. Meanwhile speaking of women’s issues and empowerment WWEmoms are working on a twitter chat soon on the WWE and Susan G. Komen Mother’s Day Campaign “Make Mom Proud”. More details soon.

Looking for that perfect antique or a special gift for a close friend? Visit My London Flat at 2600 Persa Houston, TX. What makes this beautiful boutique extraordinary is that it has a price point for everyone. The former convent at St Anne’s features whimsical items for home & garden from $5 to antique chairs from the 1900′s at a bit higher price.

Originally from St. Louis, owner Suzy Smith fashioned her boutique after her London flat where she lived and worked as a Stylist for 7 years. Everything in the boutique is based upon British history such as the mementos and books related to Downton Abbey that adorn the gorgeous antique tables. Suzy always offers you a Sophia Coppola Champagne Cocktail which you can sip while Pride & Prejudice plays on the flat screen TV. The charming boutique also presents a signature display of Smith’s own handbag line, 19th-century British seed packages made into one-of-a-kind wristlets, as well as other re-purposed vintage goods.

Our friends love My London Flat so much that we are hosting A Ladies Night Out at the Boutique on Thursday, May 2nd at 7pm. Tweet via @skconcepts or email us if you can make it. If you can’t make our event, please be sure to visit Suzy soon:
